Project Description
This July 2012, nine undergraduate students will be volunteering on a dance outreach trip in New Orleans, Louisiana. The trip is sponsored by the University of Delaware Dance Minor and ArtsBridge Scholars programs collaborating with a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization, Indigenous Pitch Dance Collective (IPDC).

Indigenous Pitch Dance Collective is committed to educating and nurturing children affected by natural and/or socioeconomic disasters. This summer marks IPDC’s sixth year returning to post-Katrina New Orleans, and their first year having a team of nine UD students serving as volunteer dance teachers.

Children who attend these free week-long camps will receive dance instruction in ballet, tap, jazz, modern, musical theatre, salsa, hip hop, and break dancing. Additionally, these camps will focus on themes such as Community, Future/Dreams, and Respect through daily discussion, creating art projects, and writing journal reflections.

Each volunteer on the NOLA project's team is expected to raise $1,000 for the service trip. The $1,000 will not only go towards covering volunteer airfare, but also towards providing food for the children (breakfast, lunch, and snack), art and journal supplies (paper, pencils, scissors, markers, crayons, paints, etc.), and T-shirts campers will wear during their end-of-the-week performances for family and friends. Any donations made to this powerful cause would be greatly appreciated!

The experience is not only life-changing for the camp children, but also for the student volunteers! Thank you very much for your consideration and support!

For students in Organizational and Community Leadership, the Philadelphia Flower Show project provides many opportunities to engage in a real-world, cross-disciplinary creative problem solving. As individuals aspiring to leadership positions in a variety of fields, the capacity to innovate will be a highly valued tool for these students. And, working with students and faculty from art and landscape design greatly enhances students' opportunity to 'see differently' and develop their creativity. Students engaged in this project get to see the full range of the process - from conceptual to prototype to construction to implementation to assessment and iteration - all within a context of collaboration and community impact.

Join fellow Blue Hens in welcoming Sam Lemheney '91, the director of the Philadelphia International Flower Show, for a presentation of all that goes into turning the 10 acres of the PA Convention Center into the nation's largest indoor flower show. Also present will be UD students who will be designing an educational exhibit for the 2013 show.

Sam Lemheney made his debut as Show Designer for the Philadelphia International Flower Show after working closely with Ed Lindemann (Show Designer from 1980-2004). Sam's life long association with horticulture began with his father and grandfather, both of whom owned and operated flower shops in the region. He began his career at the Walt Disney World Co. as an intern at the Land Horticulture Science Program in 1989, received a B.S. in Plant Science from the University of Delaware in 1991 and began his career at Disney in June of that year, eventually becoming the Area Area Manager of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival.
